England battle to 1-1 draw with Denmark with qualification still up for grabs

Match report:

A late Harry Kane penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw for England against Denmark in their Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday, keeping alive their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds with a game to spare.

The Three Lions had been in danger of losing their chance to automatic qualification after falling behind to a first-half goal from Christian Eriksen, but Kane's spot-kick, awarded for a handball by Joachim Andersen, earned a share of the spoils.

The result leaves England top of Group B on 10 points, one ahead of Denmark, who are now three points clear of third-placed Switzerland. England will qualify for the knockout rounds if they avoid defeat in their final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday.

England must improve

Despite securing a draw, England's performance was far from convincing. They struggled to create chances against a well-organized Danish defense and looked vulnerable on the counterattack.

Manager Gareth Southgate will be hoping for a much-improved display against Slovenia on Tuesday, when victory will guarantee England's place in the knockout rounds.

Denmark still in contention

Denmark's draw with England keeps them in contention for automatic qualification. They will need to beat Slovenia in their final group game and hope that England lose to Switzerland.

If Denmark finish level on points with England, their superior goal difference will see them progress to the knockout rounds as group winners.
